Firefly Aerospace has been awarded a $13 million subcontract from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) to build the aeroshell for the Skyfall Mars mission. The aeroshell will serve as the protective capsule for the entry, descent, and landing (EDL) of the spacecraft as it enters the Martian atmosphere, shielding the vehicle from extreme heat and deceleration forces.
The Skyfall mission is part of NASA’s broader strategy to return samples from Mars and advance human exploration capabilities. Under the subcontract, Firefly will design, manufacture, and deliver the aeroshell structure, leveraging its expertise in composite structures and thermal protection systems.

The subcontract strengthens Firefly’s position as a key supplier for NASA’s planetary science and exploration programs. Firefly will perform the work at its existing manufacturing facilities, leveraging its production capabilities to meet the mission timeline.
The Skyfall mission is expected to launch in the coming years, with the aeroshell playing a critical role in ensuring the safe delivery of the spacecraft to the Martian surface.
